UK Army chief: Britain no match for Russian military

The British military would struggle to hold its own against the Russians, the head of the UK’s army said.

In an address to the Royal United Services Institute, Chief of the General Staff Nick Carter said that at present, Moscow is building increasingly aggressive, expeditionary forces and long-range missiles, which have recently been tested in Syria.

Carter’s speech, which was approved by Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson, also noted that Britain will fall even farther behind Russia unless it begins investing more in its military capabilities.

“The time to address these threats is now — we cannot afford to sit back,” he said.

“Our ability to pre-empt or respond to threats will be eroded if we don’t keep up with our adversaries,” he continued. “We must take notice of what is going on around us or our ability to take action will be massively constrained.

“Speed of decision making, speed of deployment, and modern capability are essential if we wish to provide realistic deterrence,” Carter added.

Williamson has been clear that he wants more funding for the military.

Some members of Parliament recently raised alarms amid reports that the military was planning to cut 14,000 personnel, nine warships and 100 helicopters. [source]
