U.S. Army general assures that NATO forces ‘will fight’ Russia if need be

A U.S. Army general has assured a panel convened to discuss NATO’s future that troops belonging to the alliance would certainly fight Russian forces if it came to that.

“There are US troops, French, British troops in these countries, standing tall,” Maj. Gen. William Hickman said last week at George Washington University, in response to a question about whether NATO would fight if Russia attacked any Baltic nations.

Hickman, the American deputy chief of staff to Allied Command Transformation (ACT), was specifically talking about four battalions of NATO troops totaling about 4,500 in all deployed to the Baltics over the summer.

“It’s not the Cold War days, where we had 300,000 soldiers there, but they’re there to demonstrate NATO’s resolve,” he said.

“They will fight” if pressed he said, adding that the alliance has plans to reinforce those troops should they come under attack. [source]
