Several people were sent to area hospitals following a shooting near the entrance of the National Security Agency, which is located inside the U.S. Army’s Ft. Meade, near Baltimore.
Officials said no one was injured from gunfire, however, but rather were hurt by a vehicle that attempted to breach the facility’s secure entrance around 0700 this morning.
Images from local news outlets showed authorities surrounding two handcuffed people after a black SUV ran into a barrier outside the Maryland base.
“NSA police and local law enforcement are addressing an incident that took place this morning at one of NSA’s secure vehicle entry gates. The situation is under control and there’s no ongoing security or safety threat,” an early NSA statement said.
President Trump was briefed on the incident.
Images from a local media helicopter show police and fire department response outside the facility. Local media reported that bullet holes could be seen in the vehicle’s front window, and air bags were deployed. Blood-stained material could be seen on the ground. [source]
For the record: I’ve been to Ft. Meade; the military’s public affairs courses are taught there (Defense Information School) – that one of my military occupational specialties. NSA is located well within the confines of Ft. Meade and is itself fenced off from the rest of the base, which is guarded by military and civilian police contractors. It was no accident that NSA was put inside an active-duty military base; it was done as an extra measure of security.
