The crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, has escalated a war of words with Iran, calling the Islamic republic’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “the new Hitler of the Middle East.”
The two countries have ramped up their rhetoric following a missile launch from Yemen by Houthi rebels backed and armed by Tehran. The Saudis intercepted the missile with a U.S.-made Patriot anti-missile battery.
“We learned from Europe that appeasement doesn’t work. We don’t want the new Hitler in Iran to repeat what happened in Europe in the Middle East,” bin Salman said in an interview published yesterday.
The increased tensions with Iran have come after bin Salman sacked or arrested more than 200 princes, businessmen and other elites.
He dismissed the crackdown as a power grab, saying that “a majority of the royal family” is behind him.
