Russian politician: ‘War would be suicide for U.S.’

A Russian senator used bellicose language to describe any future conflict between his country and the United States.

“I am confident that war with Russia is not in U.S. plans,” Senator Konstantin Kosachev told the Russian Parliament’s official newspaper, when answering a question about trends in the upcoming year. “This would be suicide on their part.”

In the absence of any breakthrough in relations between Russia and the U.S., Moscow has repeatedly warned its military is capable of defending the country and of meeting and defeating all comers, including the United States.

Mainly, Russian political leaders have touted Russia’s vast, modernizing nuclear arsenal as a check against any foreign aggression.

Aside from avoiding war with the U.S., Kosachev had little positive to say about the projection of the U.S.-Russia relationship.

“There is no cause for optimism on the topic of Russian-American relations for me,” he said. [source]
