Macedonia to become 30th NATO member next year?

The landlocked country of Macedonia, which sits on Greece’s norther border and Kosovo’s southern border, and is sandwiched by Bulgaria to the east and Albania from the west, is set to become NATO’s 30th member next year, a move that likely will increase tensions with Russia.

At least, that prediction was made by State Department Director for South and Central Europe Matthew Palmer on Wednesday at the US-Nuclear Charter Partnership Committee meeting in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica.

“Addressing the name issue will also be a push to strengthen regional stability and we welcome the resumption of negotiations between Macedonia and Greece,” he said.

The organization was set up in 2003 on the initiative of the United States to coordinate the activities of NATO candidate countries. [source]
