Former US Ambassador to China on the current state of play

Former U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus appeared on Bloomberg Radio in an interview about where the U.S. currently stands with China.  Here’s a summation of Baucus’s remarks.

  • The President Trump is not standing up to China as forcefully as he should.
  • China has been “disrespectful” on the U.S. trade imbalance, and is using U.S. trade as a bargaining chip with President Trump in negotiations regarding North Korea.
  • “China sees North Korea as an irritant, but China does not want a Korean Peninsula being dislocated or fall apart.  They don’t want [North Korean] refugees coming over, and they clearly don’t want the U.S. and South Korea to have a greater influence [in the Korean Peninsula].”
