Early Warning for 24 August

Here’s your Early Warning for Thursday morning.

In yesterday’s State Department presser, Spokeswoman Heather Nauert updated reporters on the condition of State Department personnel in Cuba who’ve experienced ‘bizarre’ medical conditions.  Nauert refused to provide any additional details about their condition, illness, or the number affected, however, she did say that the situation was ‘unprecedented’.  “Those incidents have caused a variety of physical symptoms… The investigation is still ongoing… This is unprecedented. We have not seen this type of activity take place before.”  Apparently this illness has caused brain damage, according to one reports, and was first reported in December 2016. [Initial report]

The Russian media is ‘going bonkers’ with reports that the U.S. Embassy in Moscow has stopped issuing travel visas for Russian citizens.  State Department cutbacks (mandated by Russia) at the Embassy included part of the Consular staff which adjudicates visas.  “That will pick back up again. [Russian citizens] will be able to come to the United States again. However, once that does happen, it will be at a reduced pace,” Nauert said in a press briefing yesterday.  Russian foreign minister Lavrov accused the US of attempting to foment discontent with Russian citizens against their government.
