Good morning. Here’s your Early Warning for Thursday, 16 November.

The Army’s Chief of Staff is calling for additional American troops in Europe this week. Yesterday morning, Gen. Milley said, “We, the Army, think that additional capability is probably needed, in combination with our NATO allies, to ensure deterrence of further Russian territorial aggression.” As of last year, the Army had around 62,000 troops in Europe — much less than the 250,000 stationed and deployed there in the 1970s. Gen. Milley said that they’re “on track” in Europe, but both he and the Congress believe Europe needs more. [Read more…]

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Japanese navies launched a 10-day exercise today involving some 14,000 U.S. servicemen, an aircraft carrier, and several guided-missile destroyers. This is an annual drill which “is designed to increase the defensive readiness and interoperability of Japanese and American forces through training in air and sea operations,” according to the U.S. Navy. Yesterday, President Trump vowed to implement “maximum pressure” on North Korea, as the U.S. Pacific Command chief reiterated that military-backed diplomacy is being pursued. [Read more…]
