Good morning. Here’s your Early Warning for Monday, 02 October.
On Sunday morning, as news broke that SECSTATE Tillerson has U.S. officials in “direct contact” with North Korean diplomats, President Trump took to Twitter. “I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man.” In a follow-up tweet, the president wrote, “Save your energy Rex, we’ll do what has to be done!” It’s unclear if this is posturing to support diplomatic channels, or if the President has already decided that military action must be pursued. Meanwhile, Tillerson told reporters, ““We are probing. Stay tuned,” in regards to his diplomatic efforts to negotiate with North Korea. Either way, North Korea is in no position to give up its nuclear weapons program. [source]
On early Monday morning, a gunman opened fire on a group of 22,000 concert-goers, killing at least 50 and injuring hundreds more in Las Vegas, Nevada. 64-year old Stephen Paddock, a local, used a vantage point from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, and his motive is currently unclear. It’s now become the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.
