Claim: Russia helping North Korea weaponize anthrax

The Russians may be assisting the North Koreans in weaponizing anthrax so they can mount it atop a ballistic missile, according to a retired U.S. intelligence officer.

Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, in an appearance on the Fox Business network, said it’s possible that Russian scientists were assisting the North Korean effort.

“They are probably profiting from the collapse of the Soviet Union, after which there is a lot of Soviet biological scientists looking for work,” he said.

Peters based his assessment in part on the fact that traces of Anthrax found on a North Korean defector may indicate that Kim Jong-un is likely attempting to weaponize the hearty bacteria.

Peters said the defector was either inoculated so he could guard anthrax-production facilities or he built up an immunity.

“It’s verification the programme is still going on,” he said.

As for the Russian connection, Peters noted: “Not only do I think it, I can virtually guarantee it to you.” [source]
