The People’s Liberation Army Navy modernization is proceeding apace, with the PLAN adding a pair of new stealthy submarine hunter-killer warships to its fleet in November.
The two Type 056/056A Jiangdao-class corvettes added this month are the Guangyuan (hull number 552) and Suining (hull number 551), were commissioned on November 16 and 28 respectively at a naval base in Guangzhou, Guangdong province in southern China.
Both ships will serve the PLAN’s South Sea Fleet, which operates in the South China Sea region.
Type 056A corvettes have been designed for patrol and escort operations in the exclusive economic zones of China within 200 nautical miles from the coast.
The navy is planning to build at least 60 of the ships, with a new vessel launched every six weeks. In 2017, seven of the ships have already been commissioned, with four more planned for next month and January 2018. [source]
