Chinese President Xi says war cannot be allowed on Korean peninsula

Chinese President Xi Jinping said North Korea’s differences arising between North Korea, South Korea and the United States over the former’s nuclear weapons program must be resolved diplomatically, and that war could not be permitted on the peninsula.

Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the danger of “sleepwalking” into conflict.

Xi made his comments to visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Tuesday that the U.S. and North Korea should sit down “face to face” and talk.

The Trump administration later added that wouldn’t happen until North Korean behavior improved.

Meeting in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Xi told Moon the goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula must be adhered to, but that war and chaos cannot be allowed, Chinese state media said.

“The peninsula issue must, in the end, be resolved via dialogue and consultation,” Xi was quoted as saying.

South Korean media reported that Moon agreed war on the peninsula was not a viable option. [source]
