China’s navy begins live-fire drill off Korean peninsula

The Chinese navy is holding live-fire exercises in waters off the Korean peninsula, as tensions remain high between North and South Korea and the United States over Pyongyang’s advancing nuclear weapons program.

Exercises will begin Thursday in the Bohai Sea and will last until 1600 local time next Monday, according to a notice issued by the Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration.

The drills are being conducted by the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s North Sea Fleet, which is based at Lushun in Liaoning province.

Amid the growing military tensions, the PLA Navy’s guided-missile destroyers have carried out a series of live-fire drills in the Yellow Sea while the Air Force has stepped up its patrol and surveillance over the region.

On Monday, China and Russia started a simulated anti-missile exercise in Beijing. [source]
