China issues new warning to South Korea over THAAD anti-missile system

Chinese diplomats have renewed their warning to South Korean counterparts to ensure that a U.S.-built anti-missile system known as THAAD not infringe on Beijing’s national security.

The warning comes ahead of a visit by South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Beijing next month.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi issued the call over the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system in talks with his South Korean counterpart Kang Kyung-wha in Beijing.

U.S. and South Korea defense officials have said THAAD systems are there to protect against missile launches by North Korea, not China.

Beijing countered that the sophisticated system could peer into China as well.

For his part, Wang said that South Korea should stick to an earlier pledge not to participate in any U.S. missile defense shield.

“There is a saying in China that promises must be kept and action must be resolute. We hope that South Korea will continue to properly handle this problem,” said Wang.
