A B-1B Lancer bomber has hit “multiple moving maritime targets” using a new long-range missile over Point Mugu Sea Test Range off the coast of California.
The drill involved the U.S. Navy’s new Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM).
The B-1B aircraft successfully launched a pair of LRSAM’s at once, a first, and both missiles struck their targets at sea.
“The completion of this test marks another significant accomplishment for the innovative team of government and industry professionals committed to fielding dominant surface warfare capability on an accelerated timeline,” said Captain Todd Huber, LRASM program manager.
The Navy plans to use the new missiles as stand-off weapons, enabling the sea service to destroy surface threats from great distances, without putting U.S. aircraft and warships in range of enemy counterattack. [source]
